The Gable Family
Philadelphia, PA
Josh Gable, 15, has suffered from asthma since he was nine. Overall, his condition is mild, but his mother Kim noted that when he has an attack, it can get pretty severe. “At one point, (doctors) almost had to incubate him.”
But Josh doesn’t let his asthma get in the way of playing football or baseball. “I just kind of go with the flow,” he said. The freshman at Sun Valley High School in Aston, Pa, who is also a Philadelphia Eagles fan - particularly of Brian Westbrook - said he keeps his asthma under control as much as possible by recognizing his symptoms and using an inhaler or a nebulizer when it’s necessary.
“In the cold weather especially, I bring my inhaler with me to (football) practices and games and if I start wheezing, I tell my coach,” said Josh, who added that the coach will have him sit on the bench for a while. ‘When I feel better, I get back in the game.”
Josh also gets by with a little help from his friends. “My friends don’t treat me any differently because I have asthma, but they just make sure that I’m alright,” said Josh. “If I start wheezing, they check on me and tell me to calm down.”
The message the 15-year-old wants other kids to know is – “Don’t be afraid to let your teachers, your coaches and your friends know about your asthma. If you’re not feeling right, let someone know.”
