"Do You Want to Play Catch?" Literacy Leaders Across the Nation Do
Students who read at least five books during the summer perform significantly better in school the following fall than those that do not read at all, or read very little.
This is because literacy is the cornerstone of education. The Chris Draft Family Foundation has pushed literacy into the forefront of the minds of Americans through the release of Chris Draft's children's book "Do You Want to Play Catch?".
In "Do You Want To Play Catch?," Draft shares his story of how the simple game of "catch" can teach valuable lessons and build relationships. The vivid, youthful illustrations and heartwarming story will inspire families to get out and 'play catch' as a way to strengthen their family bond while encouraging healthy physical activity.
The release of "Do You Want to Play Catch?" served as the kickoff for a host of literacy events across the United States, from book signings, to "Let's Read, Let's Move" with U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and leading into "A Book in Every Kid's Hands." Draft also boarded the USS George H. W. Bush for A Celebration of Reading at Sea with the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy and worked to spread the message of the critically-acclaimed documentary "Waiting for Superman."
Literacy will continue to be a key issue for the foundation in 2011 as we secure stronger partnerships with the PTA, the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, Reading is Fundamental, the U.S. Department of Education, Everybody Wins! and numerous other organizations committed to reversing the negative trends in too many of our nation's schools.
