I have been involved in a week-long literacy event at our children's grammar school for the last four years. As co-chair and chairperson, I have seen the event come to fruition every February with the help of many dedicated and capable volunteers.
The event, called AuthorFest, includes a series of events around the theme of literacy and language arts. A series of events take place that are designed to unite student, teachers, administrators, town library personnel and volunteers in reading! Assembly and in-class programs, combined with author readings, book signings, and author luncheons, reinforce the power of writing and reading. The authors share their knowledge of composition, story development, editing and publication with the children -- but mostly they share their love of books, illustrating and story-telling! The week also includes special group activites, like the Character Parade (grades K through 2) where students dress up as their favorite character and march throughout the school's corridors, proudly displaying their costumes and the book they represent. For 3rd and 4th grades, volunteers lead a Book-Making Craft, where students create a personalized journal that reflects their own creative personality and are later used for to encourage journal entries and story writing.
AuthorFest week is really the culmination of a comprehensive six month program. To prepare for the authors' visits, the students do in-class readings and research. Teachers integrate the books and themes through inter-curriculum involvement with art, science and social studies lessons. The PTO undertakes various marketing activities to start to get the students curious and excited about the upcoming week's activities.
