An art show to celebrate the life of a former Atlanta native, Joseph S. Lerner III, while raising lung cancer awareness for local Atlanta families with “Creating With Joey.”
Atlanta- “Creating With Joey” organized by the Lerner family will honor the life of a young, healthy, non-smoker who was suddenly diagnosed with lung cancer at age 39 and passed at age 40.
As the first event honoring Joey after his passing on July 11, 2011, the Lerner family hopes to celebrate the life, art, and memory of a son, brother, and friend. Held on his birthday, they wish to give the gift of educating others and encourage funding for such a deadly and often overlooked disease.
This former local artist’s paintings will be on display along with speakers including Chris Draft, former NFL player, and Dr. Walter Curran, chief medical officer of The Winship Cancer Institute.
With sincere hopes to help support research focused on prevention, increase survival rates and quality of life of local patients, and raise possible funds for early detection, the Lerner family will give all optional donations to Winship Cancer Institute’s Lung Cancer Fund.
Lung cancer is the deadliest cancer in the world and leading cause of death of men and women in Georgia with 7,200 cases yearly. Lung cancer research is the most underfunded compared to other major cancers, and the present 15% survival rate is the same rate as forty years ago. Lung cancer kills more people than breast, colon, prostate, liver, kidney, and melanoma cancers combined.
